The Somali capital, Mogadishu, today hosted a high-level meeting between the  Somali National Army (SNA)  and the  Italian Armed Forces . Held at Aden Adde International Airport , the event symbolized the strengthening of the long-standing relationship between the two nations.

The Italian delegation, led by  General Luciano Portolano , Chief of Defence Staff of Italy, was officially welcomed at the airport. He was received by General Maadey Nuurey Sheekh , Acting Chief of Defence and Deputy Commander of the Somali National Army, alongside senior military officials and ceremonial troops.

The Italian delegation received a warm welcome. Somali troops lined up in perfect order and presented a formal military salute. The scene was among the most shared images on social media today, reflecting the professionalism and pride of the Somali Armed Forces.


 General Portolano was escorted inside the airport, where he met General Maadey directly upon arrival. The beginning of an extended meeting that would cover a wide range of topics, including cooperation, security, and long-term strategic planning, was marked by the two generals exchanging formal military greetings.

During the official session, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening military relations based on mutual interests. Key discussion points included:

1.Enhancing Training Programs  Italy pledged to increase military training opportunities for Somali soldiers, particularly those engaged in counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab.

 2.Provision of Modern Equipment  – An agreement was reached for Italy to provide advanced military equipment tailored to the needs of the Somali infantry and special units.

 3.Counterterrorism Collaboration : In order to improve the fight against extremist groups like Al-Shabaab, both sides agreed to share operational and intelligence expertise.


4. Italy’s Role in the EU Framework  – Italy reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for Somalia in European Union platforms, to secure sustainable financial and political support.
